Charlotte’s Trove is located in the original location of News Printing Co. in Roaring Spring, PA. H.A. “Barney” and Charlotte Barnhart purchased the business and facility in 1954 when they came to Blair County to take over three fledgling newspapers being produced by News Printing Co.
It was in this building that the Barnhart’s company grew from an extremely popular weekly newspaper to a very successful printing company known as News Printing Company. As the company grew, they also outgrew the building. In 1991, while the printing no longer took place here, Charlotte and Barney found other ways to use the building. A kitchen and conference center were built on, providing NPC employees with the perfect location to hold meetings.
It also gave Charlotte a place to cook for her employees, which was something she always loved to do. While NPC was using the kitchen and the conference room for meetings, the front of the building was open for Charlotte and Barney to use as they pleased. As avid antique collectors, they began to fill the front room with their treasures. After 30 years of collecting, every square inch of the front room was filled with antiques.
Sixty-years later, almost to the day that the building was purchased, Barney and Charlotte’s daughter (Charlene Dodson) is reopening the doors of this facility with her mother’s name on it. It is a tribute to both of her parents , but it is also a community treasure that has history, mystery, gifts and more. The facility has many interesting and unique features, which is why we refer to it as a museum, too.
